About Yoast SEO Premium 18.0

Yoast SEO Premium is the paid extension of Yoast SEO, one of the most widely installed WordPress SEO plugins. The free plugin handles the basics: titles and meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs, structured data and a readability and keyphrase check for each page. Premium builds on that base and adds the tools editors tend to want next.

The main additions are the ability to optimise a page for more than one keyphrase, a redirect manager that offers to create a redirect when you delete a page or change its URL, previews of how a page will look when shared on social networks, suggestions for internal links to related content while you write, and insights into the words that dominate your text.

Premium isn't a standalone plugin. It needs the free Yoast SEO plugin installed and active, and it works best when both are on versions from the same period. It also doesn't change rankings by itself: it helps you set up and check pages properly, while content quality and links still do the heavy lifting.

Requirements

  • The free Yoast SEO plugin, installed and active

Key features

Multiple focus keyphrases
Check a page against several keyphrases instead of one, including related terms and synonyms, so pages can target a topic rather than a single phrase.
Redirect manager
Create, edit and import redirects, and get prompted to add one when you delete a page or change its URL.
Social previews
See how a page will look when shared on Facebook and X (Twitter), and set the title, description and image used for each.
Internal linking suggestions
While you write, see related posts and pages on your site that are worth linking to.
Content insights
See the words that appear most in a page, to check that they match the topic you meant to write about.
Everything in the free plugin
Premium sits on top of the free plugin's titles, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs and structured data.
Page-level control
Set canonical URLs, control whether a page is indexed, and tune each page's search and social appearance from one box in the editor.

Is it right for you?

A good fit for

  • Blogs and content sites that want to optimise articles for a topic, not just one phrase
  • Sites that restructure content often and need redirects handled when URLs change
  • Writers and editors who benefit from internal link suggestions inside the editor

Look elsewhere if

  • WooCommerce stores that need richer product data: that comes from Yoast's separate WooCommerce SEO add-on, not Premium
  • Sites already running Rank Math or All in One SEO that work well: two SEO plugins on one site create duplicate tags
  • Sites that only need titles, meta descriptions and a sitemap, which the free plugin already covers

How to install Yoast SEO Premium 18.0

  1. 1

    Download the file

Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.

  2. 2

    Upload it to WordPress

In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.

  3. 3

    Install and activate

Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.

Notes for this product

  • Install and activate the free Yoast SEO plugin first. Premium extends it and doesn't run on its own.
  • Keep the free plugin and Premium on versions from the same period. A large gap between them can show a version notice and switch Premium features off.

Setup: using Yoast SEO Premium 18.0

  1. Run the first-time configuration. Open Yoast SEO in your dashboard menu and complete the configuration, if offered, to set your site type, whether the site is a business or a person, and your search visibility.
  2. Set your search appearance defaults. Under Search Appearance (named Settings in newer versions), review the title and description templates for posts, pages and archives.
  3. Add keyphrases to a post. Open a post, find the Yoast SEO box, enter the focus keyphrase, and add related keyphrases to check the page against more than one.
  4. Check your sitemap. Yoast creates an XML sitemap at /sitemap_index.xml. Open it to confirm it loads, then submit it in Google Search Console.
  5. Set up redirects. Open the Redirects page in the Yoast SEO menu to add redirects by hand, or accept the prompt Premium shows when you delete or move a page.
  6. Check social previews. On a post, open the Social tab to preview the Facebook and X cards and set a share image.

Common problems and fixes

Duplicate titles or meta descriptions in the page source
Why it happens
Another SEO plugin, or the theme itself, is also outputting title and meta tags.
How to fix it
Deactivate the other SEO plugin and check your theme's settings for its own SEO options, then view the page source to confirm only one title and one description remain.
The sitemap shows a 404 error
Why it happens
WordPress's rewrite rules haven't refreshed, or another plugin or a leftover sitemap file is taking the same address.
How to fix it
Go to Settings, Permalinks and click Save Changes without altering anything. If it still fails, remove any old sitemap.xml file from your site's root and turn off other sitemap plugins.
Premium features are missing, or a notice mentions the free plugin
Why it happens
The free Yoast SEO plugin isn't active, or its version is far from Premium's.
How to fix it
Activate the free plugin and update it, or use Request an update from your account for a Premium file closer to your installed version.
A redirect doesn't work
Why it happens
A page cache or CDN is serving the old page, so the redirect never runs.
How to fix it
Clear your page cache and CDN, then test the old URL in a private window.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
Why it happens
The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
How to fix it
Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
Why it happens
The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
How to fix it
Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
Why it happens
Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
How to fix it
Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
Why it happens
The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
How to fix it
Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the free Yoast SEO plugin as well?

Yes. Premium is an extension of the free plugin, so the free plugin has to be installed and active for Premium to work.

What does Premium add over the free version?

The main additions are multiple focus keyphrases, a redirect manager, social previews, internal linking suggestions and content insights. Titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps and breadcrumbs come from the free plugin.

Does it work with WooCommerce?

It works on a WooCommerce site, but product-specific data such as product schema and identifiers comes from Yoast's separate WooCommerce SEO add-on.

Can I use it alongside Rank Math or All in One SEO?

No. Running two SEO plugins at once creates duplicate meta tags and schema. Choose one SEO plugin for the site.

Will it improve my rankings by itself?

No plugin can promise that. Premium helps you set pages up correctly and avoid technical mistakes, but rankings still depend on content quality, links and competition.

Does it create redirects for deleted pages automatically?

It prompts you when you delete a page or change its URL and offers to create the redirect. You confirm it, rather than it happening silently.
