About WPMU DEV Ning To BuddyPress WordPress Plugin 1.2.2

This plugin moves a community off Ning and into BuddyPress. It imports your Ning network's users, their custom profile fields and their avatars, so members don't have to sign up again on the new site.

While it runs, it shows a status page with the members being imported, their avatars and progress. The page refreshes and processes the import file in batches of 5 members. The file on record is version 1.2.2 from August 2017, so test with your current BuddyPress and WordPress on a staging site first.

Requirements

  • BuddyPress
  • An export file from your Ning network

Key features

User import
Brings the users of a Ning network into WordPress.
Profile fields
Imports custom profile fields into BuddyPress.
Avatars
Imports member avatars so profiles keep their pictures.
Batch processing
Processes the import file in batches of 5 members.
Live status page
Shows member details and progress as the page refreshes.

Is it right for you?

A good fit for

  • Community owners moving a Ning network to WordPress and BuddyPress
  • Agencies migrating member data from Ning for a client

Look elsewhere if

  • Sites that don't run BuddyPress
  • Migrations from platforms other than Ning

How to install WPMU DEV Ning To BuddyPress WordPress Plugin 1.2.2

  1. 1

    Download the file

Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.

  2. 2

    Upload it to WordPress

In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.

  3. 3

    Install and activate

Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.

Notes for this product

  • Set up BuddyPress and create matching extended profile fields before running the import, so Ning fields have somewhere to land.

Setup: using WPMU DEV Ning To BuddyPress WordPress Plugin 1.2.2

  1. Back up and use staging. Take a full backup. Test the import on a copy first.
  2. Prepare BuddyPress. Activate BuddyPress and set up the profile fields you want to keep.
  3. Provide the Ning export. Export your network data from Ning and add the file where the plugin asks for it.
  4. Run the import. Start it and keep the status page open until it finishes.
  5. Check the members. Open several imported profiles to confirm fields and avatars.

Common problems and fixes

The import stalls on the status page
Why it happens
The browser tab was closed or a server timeout interrupted the batch refresh.
How to fix it
Keep the tab open and ask your host to raise execution time limits, then resume.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
Why it happens
The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
How to fix it
Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
Why it happens
The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
How to fix it
Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
Why it happens
Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
How to fix it
Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
Why it happens
The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
How to fix it
Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.
