About WPForms 1.8.6

WPForms is a drag-and-drop form builder for WordPress. You build a form by dragging fields onto a canvas, set up the emails it sends, choose what visitors see after submitting, and add it to a page with a block or shortcode. Contact forms are the most common use, but the same builder handles quote requests, sign-ups, surveys and order forms.

This file is listed as WPForms Basic. The developer sells WPForms in several editions, and which features and add-ons you get depends on the edition, so check the plugin's settings after installing to see what this copy includes.

Ignore the older description for this product, which calls it a theme: WPForms is a plugin and installs under Plugins. It adds a WPForms entry to the dashboard menu, and form entries can be stored in the database so you can review them later.

Key features

Drag-and-drop builder
Add and rearrange fields visually, without writing code.
Ready-made templates
Start from a template for common forms such as contact, quote and sign-up forms.
Email notifications
Send an email to you, and a confirmation to the visitor, whenever a form is submitted.
Confirmation options
Show a message, send visitors to another page or redirect them after they submit.
Spam protection
Reduce junk submissions with a built-in honeypot and support for reCAPTCHA and similar checks.
Entries and logic
Store submissions in the dashboard and show or hide fields based on earlier answers, depending on the edition.
Add-ons and integrations
Connect to email marketing, payment and other services through add-ons, which depend on the edition.

Is it right for you?

A good fit for

  • Site owners who want a simple contact form without coding
  • Small businesses collecting quote requests, bookings or sign-ups
  • Agencies who want a form builder clients can edit

Look elsewhere if

  • Sites that need advanced survey analysis, where a dedicated survey platform fits better
  • Anyone counting on every WPForms add-on being available, since add-ons depend on the edition and licence

How to install WPForms 1.8.6

  1. 1

    Download the file

Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.

  2. 2

    Upload it to WordPress

In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.

  3. 3

    Install and activate

Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.

Notes for this product

  • If the free WPForms Lite plugin is installed, deactivate it before activating this copy so the two versions don't conflict.

Setup: using WPForms 1.8.6

  1. Create a new form. Open WPForms in the dashboard menu and choose Add New.
  2. Choose a template or start blank. Pick the template closest to what you need, or begin with an empty form.
  3. Add and arrange fields. Drag fields onto the form, set labels and mark required ones.
  4. Set up notifications. In the form's settings, choose which email address receives submissions and what the confirmation email says.
  5. Set the confirmation. Decide what visitors see after they submit: a message or a redirect.
  6. Add the form to a page and test. Place it with the WPForms block or its shortcode, then submit a test entry and check the email arrives.

Common problems and fixes

Form emails don't arrive
Why it happens
WordPress's default mail sending is unreliable on many hosts, and messages are blocked or land in spam.
How to fix it
Connect an SMTP or transactional email service, then send a test submission.
The form shows a spinner and never submits
Why it happens
A script conflict, or a caching or optimisation plugin interfering with the form's JavaScript.
How to fix it
Exclude the WPForms scripts from combining and minifying, clear caches, and check the browser console for the first error.
Lots of spam submissions
Why it happens
Bots are submitting the form directly.
How to fix it
Turn on the spam protection settings and add reCAPTCHA or a similar check to the form.
The add-ons screen asks for a licence
Why it happens
WPForms installs add-ons from the developer's servers using a licence key, which this download doesn't include.
How to fix it
Check whether the add-on you need is in the store as a separate file, or use Request an update from your account.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
Why it happens
The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
How to fix it
Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
Why it happens
The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
How to fix it
Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
Why it happens
Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
How to fix it
Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
Why it happens
The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
How to fix it
Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.
