About WPML Multilingual CMS WordPress Plugin 4.4.8
WPML is one of the best-known plugins for building multilingual WordPress sites. It lets you translate pages, posts, custom post types, menus and other content, show visitors a language switcher, and give each language its own URL, so search engines can index every version. The listing for this product calls it the Multilingual CMS edition.
A multilingual site is more than translated text. The plugin keeps the translations of one page linked to each other, so a visitor who switches language lands on the matching page, and it lets you decide how language shows up in the address, such as a directory per language. Some features, like translating theme strings or running the translation workflow for teams, come from WPML's companion components.
The file on record is from September 2018, and there is a second, newer WPML page in the store. WPML's licence also covers its translation services and updates, which this download doesn't include. Test any copy on a staging site with your own theme and plugins, since multilingual setups touch almost everything.

- Works with themes and plugins
- Designed to work with most themes, with extra add-ons for popular plugins such as WooCommerce.
Is it right for you?
A good fit for
- Businesses that sell or publish in several languages
- Agencies building multilingual sites for clients
- Sites that want every language indexed with its own URLs
Look elsewhere if
- Single-language sites, where a translation plugin adds weight for no benefit
- Anyone who needs WPML's licensed translation services and updates to work, since this file doesn't include them
- Very small sites that only need one or two translated pages, where a simple manual setup is enough
How to install WPML Multilingual CMS WordPress Plugin 4.4.8
- 1
Download the file
Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.
- 2
Upload it to WordPress
In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.
- 3
Install and activate
Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.
Notes for this product
- WPML is made of several components, such as String Translation and Translation Management, and WooCommerce needs its own add-on. Check which of those you have before you plan the build, and test on a staging copy.
Setup: using WPML Multilingual CMS WordPress Plugin 4.4.8
- Run the setup wizard. After activating, open WPML in the dashboard menu and choose your site's default language and the languages you want to add.
- Decide how languages appear in URLs. Choose between a directory per language, subdomains or a language parameter, and keep that choice.
- Add a language switcher. Place a switcher in your menu, a widget or the footer.
- Translate your first page. Open a page, choose to add a translation and enter the text, or use the translation editor.
- Translate menus and strings. Translate your menus and the fixed text from your theme and plugins.
- Test every language. Switch between languages on a phone and a computer and check that links, forms and the search work.
Common problems and fixes
The language switcher takes visitors to the home page instead of the matching page
- Why it happens
- The page hasn't been translated yet, or its translation isn't linked to the original.
- How to fix it
- Translate the page using WPML's own translation controls so the two versions are linked, then test again.
Translated pages show a 404 error
- Why it happens
- WordPress's address rules haven't refreshed after the languages were set up.
- How to fix it
- Go to Settings, Permalinks and click Save Changes.
Theme or plugin text stays in the original language
- Why it happens
- Those texts are strings that need translating separately from page content.
- How to fix it
- Use the string translation feature to translate them, or check that the theme is marked as WPML-compatible.
WPML asks for a site key or licence
- Why it happens
- Updates and translation services are tied to WPML's licence, which this download doesn't include.
- How to fix it
- The core translation features work without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
- Why it happens
- The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
- How to fix it
- Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
- Why it happens
- The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
- How to fix it
- Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
- Why it happens
- Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
- How to fix it
- Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
- Why it happens
- The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
- How to fix it
- Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.

Frequently asked questions
Why are there two WPML pages in the store?
The store lists two versions of WPML, an older and a newer file. Pick the newer one unless you have a reason to use the older.
Does it work with WooCommerce?
WooCommerce translation needs WPML's separate WooCommerce add-on. Check whether the store has that file for the version you choose.
Will each language get its own URL?
Yes. You choose between a directory per language, subdomains or a language parameter.
Is the file up to date?
It dates from September 2018, so test it with your current WordPress and theme on a staging copy first.
Does it translate automatically?
It manages translations and gives you an editor. Whether automatic translation is available depends on the version and its connected services, so check your copy.
