About WooCommerce Skrill Payment Gateway 1.7.1

This extension connects WooCommerce to Skrill, the payment service formerly known as Moneybookers. At checkout the customer either goes to Skrill's hosted payment page or sees that page in a frame on your site, and pays there by card, bank transfer or one of Skrill's local payment methods. Because Skrill handles the card details, your server never stores them.

The file on record is version 1.7.1 and dates from October 2017. Skrill's APIs and WooCommerce itself have changed a lot since then, including the newer block-based checkout. Install it on a staging site, run sandbox or test transactions first, and only switch to live payments once orders complete correctly.

Requirements

  • WooCommerce
  • A Skrill merchant account

Key features

Skrill at WooCommerce checkout
Adds Skrill as a payment method alongside your other WooCommerce gateways.
Redirect or embedded page
Send customers to Skrill's hosted page, or show that page in a frame on your own checkout.
Cards and local methods
Customers can pay with cards, bank transfers and the local payment options Skrill offers in their country.
Multiple currencies
Skrill accepts many currencies, so you can sell to buyers in many countries.
Card data kept off your site
Payment details are entered on Skrill's servers, which keeps most card-handling compliance work with Skrill.

Is it right for you?

A good fit for

  • WooCommerce stores that already have a Skrill merchant account
  • International shops whose customers prefer Skrill or its local payment methods

Look elsewhere if

  • Stores that want an on-page card form with no redirect or frame
  • Shops that won't test an older gateway file before going live

How to install WooCommerce Skrill Payment Gateway 1.7.1

  1. 1

    Download the file

Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.

  2. 2

    Upload it to WordPress

In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.

  3. 3

    Install and activate

Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.

Notes for this product

  • Gateways from this period were written for the classic checkout. If your checkout page uses the WooCommerce Checkout block and Skrill doesn't show there, switch that page to the classic checkout shortcode.

Setup: using WooCommerce Skrill Payment Gateway 1.7.1

  1. Prepare your Skrill account. Make sure your Skrill merchant account is active and note the merchant email and secret word from its settings.
  2. Activate the extension. Upload and activate the plugin on a staging copy of your store.
  3. Enter the gateway settings. Go to WooCommerce, Settings, Payments, open Skrill, enable it and enter your account details.
  4. Choose redirect or frame. Pick whether customers leave for Skrill's page or pay in a frame on your checkout.
  5. Test before going live. Place test orders and check that payment confirmations move them to Processing before switching your live store over.

Common problems and fixes

Skrill doesn't appear on the checkout page
Why it happens
The checkout uses the block-based checkout, which older gateways don't support.
How to fix it
Replace the Checkout block with the classic checkout shortcode, or edit the page to use the classic checkout.
Customers pay but orders stay Pending payment
Why it happens
Skrill's payment status message isn't reaching your site or fails the secret word check.
How to fix it
Check that the secret word matches in Skrill and WooCommerce, and that nothing like a firewall blocks Skrill's callback to your site.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
Why it happens
The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
How to fix it
Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
Why it happens
The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
How to fix it
Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
Why it happens
Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
How to fix it
Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
Why it happens
The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
How to fix it
Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Skrill the same as Moneybookers?

Yes. Moneybookers was renamed Skrill, so an old Moneybookers merchant account is a Skrill account.

Do I still need SSL?

Payment details are entered on Skrill's pages, but you should still run your whole store on HTTPS for customer logins and browsers' security warnings.

Does it work with the block checkout?

An extension from 2017 was built for the classic checkout. Use the classic checkout shortcode if Skrill doesn't appear in the block checkout.

Which version is the file?

The file on record is version 1.7.1, from October 2017. Test it with your current WooCommerce in sandbox or test mode before taking real payments.
