About UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin 2.23.14.26
UpdraftPlus is one of the most widely used WordPress backup plugins. It saves your site in parts, the files and the database, as backups you can schedule, send to remote storage and restore without leaving the dashboard.
Remote storage is the main reason to use it. Backups can go to cloud services such as Google Drive, Dropbox and Amazon S3, so a server failure doesn't take your backups with it. By default, backups are kept in a folder on the same server, which protects against mistakes but not against losing the host.
UpdraftPlus is sold as a free core plugin plus a Premium edition, with extras such as site migration and more storage destinations. Which of those this file includes can vary, so check the plugin's settings screens after installing.
Key features
- Scheduled backups
- Set the files and the database to back up on separate schedules, and choose how many backups to keep.
- Remote storage
- Send backups to cloud services such as Google Drive, Dropbox and Amazon S3, and others.
- Restore from the dashboard
- Restore a backup from within WordPress, choosing which parts to bring back.
- Back up now
- Start a backup by hand before you update plugins, change a theme or edit the site.
- Choose what to include
- Back up plugins, themes, uploads, other wp-content files and the database, and exclude what you don't need.
- Download and upload backups
- Download backups to your computer, or upload a backup set to restore it on another install.
- Email reports
- Get an email when a backup finishes, so you know it ran.
Is it right for you?
A good fit for
- Any WordPress site that needs automatic, off-site backups with minimal setup
- Site owners who want to restore from within the dashboard instead of using a hosting panel
- Agencies keeping backups for several client sites
Look elsewhere if
- Busy shops or membership sites where orders and sign-ups arrive constantly, since scheduled backups can lose whatever happened after the last run
- Very large sites on hosts with strict time and memory limits, unless you tune the settings for them
How to install UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin 2.23.14.26
- 1
Download the file
Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.
- 2
Upload it to WordPress
In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.
- 3
Install and activate
Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.
Notes for this product
- A backup is only as safe as the place it is stored. Connect remote storage right after activating, and test a restore on a staging copy before you need one.
Setup: using UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin 2.23.14.26
- Open the settings. Go to Settings, UpdraftPlus Backups in the dashboard and open the Settings tab.
- Set the schedules. Choose how often files and the database back up, and how many copies to retain.
- Connect remote storage. Pick a storage service, then follow the prompts to authorise UpdraftPlus to save files there.
- Choose what to include. Tick the parts of the site to back up, and exclude any large folders you don't need saved.
- Run a first backup. Click Backup Now and confirm the files appear in your remote storage.
- Practise a restore. Restore a backup on a staging copy, so you know the process works before an emergency.
Common problems and fixes
A backup stalls or fails with a timeout
- Why it happens
- The host's time or memory limits are too low for the size of the site.
- How to fix it
- Under the Expert settings, reduce the file split size, back up files and the database separately, and ask your host to raise its limits.
Scheduled backups never run
- Why it happens
- WordPress's scheduled-task system only runs when someone visits the site, and it may be disabled on your host.
- How to fix it
- Visit the site to trigger it, or set up a real server cron job that calls wp-cron.php regularly.
Cloud storage reports an authentication error
- Why it happens
- The connection to the storage service has expired or been revoked.
- How to fix it
- Open the Settings tab, reauthorise the remote storage and save, then run a backup to test it.
A restore fails or the backup can't be uploaded
- Why it happens
- The backup files are larger than your server's upload limit.
- How to fix it
- Upload the backup files over FTP into the wp-content/updraft folder, then use the rescan option so UpdraftPlus finds them.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
- Why it happens
- The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
- How to fix it
- Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
- Why it happens
- The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
- How to fix it
- Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
- Why it happens
- Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
- How to fix it
- Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
- Why it happens
- The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
- How to fix it
- Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.

Frequently asked questions
Does it back up the database?
Yes. It backs up the database as well as your files, and you can set separate schedules for each.
Where are backups saved by default?
In a folder inside wp-content on your own server. Connect remote storage so a copy exists somewhere else.
Can I restore just one part of my site?
Yes. You can restore components separately, such as the database, plugins, themes or uploads.
How often should I back up?
As often as your site changes. A brochure site might back up weekly. A site that takes orders or comments daily should back up the database daily.
Can I use it to move a site to a new host?
A backup can be restored on a fresh install, and the Premium edition adds a dedicated migrator. Check which of these this file includes.
