About Smash Balloon Custom Twitter Feeds Pro (By Smash Balloon) 1.14.1
Custom Twitter Feeds Pro is Smash Balloon's premium plugin for showing tweets on a WordPress site. Instead of pasting embed codes one tweet at a time, you set up a feed once and place it anywhere with a shortcode or widget. The feed picks up your theme's fonts and spacing, so it reads as part of the page rather than a boxed-in third-party embed.
The Pro version adds more feed sources and more control over how they look. You can pull tweets from hashtags, searches, mentions and lists as well as accounts, combine several sources in one feed, switch between list, masonry and carousel layouts, open photos and videos in a lightbox, and filter out the tweets you don't want shown.
Check the data connection before relying on it. The version on file was built for the original Twitter API. X (formerly Twitter) has since restricted and started charging for API access, and Smash Balloon changed how its feeds get data in later releases. An older copy may install and connect but stop loading new tweets, so test it on a draft page before putting it on a live one.
Key features
- Several feed sources
- Show tweets from one or more accounts, hashtags, search terms, mentions or lists, and mix them in a single feed.
- List, masonry and carousel layouts
- Pick the layout per feed and set the number of tweets, columns and spacing to fit the space it sits in.
- Media lightbox
- Photos and videos in tweets open in a lightbox on your page instead of sending visitors away to X.
- Tweet moderation
- Include or exclude tweets by word or hashtag, hide replies or retweets, and remove individual tweets from a feed.
- Link previews
- Tweets that share an article can show its title, image and description as a card, the way they appear on X.
- Server-side caching
- Tweets are stored on your site and refreshed on a schedule you choose, which keeps pages fast and limits requests to X.
- Shortcode settings per feed
- One shortcode places a feed; attributes on that shortcode override the defaults, so different pages can show different feeds.
- Load more button
- Show a short feed first and let visitors load older tweets without leaving the page.
Is it right for you?
A good fit for
- News sites and blogs that want recent posts from their X account on the page without manual embeds
- Brands running a hashtag campaign or event that want to show what people are posting about it
- Agencies building client sites that need a social feed styled to match the theme
Look elsewhere if
- Sites that need a feed guaranteed to keep updating without first testing the connection, given X's API changes
- Sites that only need one or two specific tweets: pasting a tweet's link into the block editor embeds it
- Sites that want Instagram, Facebook or YouTube posts in the same feed, since this plugin covers X only
How to install Smash Balloon Custom Twitter Feeds Pro (By Smash Balloon) 1.14.1
- 1
Download the file
Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.
- 2
Upload it to WordPress
In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.
- 3
Install and activate
Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.
Notes for this product
- If the free Custom Twitter Feeds plugin is installed, deactivate it before activating Pro so the two copies don't conflict.
Setup: using Smash Balloon Custom Twitter Feeds Pro (By Smash Balloon) 1.14.1
- Open the plugin settings. After activating, go to Twitter Feed in your WordPress dashboard menu.
- Connect an X account. Use the connect button in the settings to authorise the plugin to request tweets on your behalf.
- Choose what the feed shows. Pick the source type (account timeline, hashtag, search, mentions or list) and enter the account name, hashtag or search term.
- Set the layout and refresh interval. Choose list, masonry or carousel, the number of tweets, and how often the plugin checks for new ones.
- Match the styling. Show or hide the author, date, tweet actions and media, and adjust colours so the feed fits your theme.
- Place the feed. Add the [custom-twitter-feeds] shortcode to a page, post or text widget, and add attributes to it when one page needs a different feed.
Common problems and fixes
The feed shows an error or no tweets at all
- Why it happens
- The connection to X failed: the authorisation has expired, or X no longer accepts the kind of API connection this version makes.
- How to fix it
- Reconnect your account from the plugin settings. If the feed is still empty, this version's data connection is no longer supported; use Request an update from your account for a newer file.
New tweets don't appear on the page
- Why it happens
- The plugin's own cache, a page-cache plugin or a CDN is still serving the older feed.
- How to fix it
- Clear the plugin's feed cache from its settings, purge your page cache and CDN, and shorten the refresh interval if tweets need to show sooner.
The carousel doesn't move or the layout looks broken
- Why it happens
- An optimisation plugin is combining, deferring or minifying the feed's JavaScript, or theme CSS is overriding the feed's styles.
- How to fix it
- Exclude the plugin's script from combine, defer and minify in your optimisation plugin, clear all caches, then check again with the theme's custom CSS temporarily removed.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
- Why it happens
- The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
- How to fix it
- Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
- Why it happens
- The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
- How to fix it
- Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
- Why it happens
- Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
- How to fix it
- Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
- Why it happens
- The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
- How to fix it
- Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.

Frequently asked questions
Does this still work with X (Twitter)?
It depends on the connection. This version was built for the original Twitter API, which X has since restricted, so it may no longer load new tweets. Test it on a draft page before relying on it.
Can I show tweets for a hashtag instead of an account?
Yes. The Pro version supports hashtag and search feeds as well as account timelines, mentions and lists, and can combine several sources in one feed.
Can I hide replies or specific tweets?
Yes. You can hide replies and retweets, filter tweets by word or hashtag, and remove individual tweets from a feed.
Will a Twitter feed slow my site down?
Tweets are cached on your server and refreshed on a schedule, so visitors aren't waiting on X for every page view. A long feed with lots of media still adds weight, so keep the tweet count modest.
Can I show different feeds on different pages?
Yes. Each page uses the same shortcode with its own attributes, such as a different account or hashtag, which override the default settings.
