About WordPress User Bookmarks Standalone version 3.4
This is the standalone edition of the User Bookmarks add-on. It has the same features as the version for UserPro, but does not need UserPro, so it can run on any WordPress site. The store labels it a digital product, but the description is of a WordPress plugin.
Logged-in users bookmark any content, including posts, forum topics and custom post types, and sort their bookmarks into collections. You display the bookmark button and the collections with a widget, automatic mode or shortcodes. The file on record is version 3.4 from May 2018, so test it on a staging site first.
Key features
- Bookmark any content
- Works with posts, forum topics and any custom post type.
- Collections
- Users group bookmarks into collections and set each one private or public.
- Widget, automatic mode or shortcode
- Show the bookmark button in a sidebar widget, below post content, or with the [bookmark] shortcode.
- Collections shortcode
- The [collections] shortcode lets users manage collections and view bookmarks.
- Ajax and API
- Bookmarking runs by Ajax, and the plugin has its own API for advanced use.
Is it right for you?
A good fit for
- Content or community sites where members save articles or topics for later
- Sites that want bookmarks without installing UserPro
Look elsewhere if
- Sites that need social sharing or full user profiles, as the listing covers bookmarks only
- Visitors who are not logged in, if you want guests to save items (the listing doesn't state guest use)
How to install WordPress User Bookmarks Standalone version 3.4
- 1
Download the file
Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.
- 2
Upload it to WordPress
In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.
- 3
Install and activate
Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.
Notes for this product
- This is the standalone edition, so UserPro is not needed. Don't install it alongside the UserPro bookmarks add-on.
Setup: using WordPress User Bookmarks Standalone version 3.4
- Activate the plugin. Activate it from the Plugins screen and look for its settings.
- Choose the post types. Select which post types may be bookmarked and exclude any posts you don't want.
- Show the bookmark button. Turn on the automatic mode below post content, add the widget, or place the [bookmark] shortcode.
- Add a collections page. Create a page with the [collections] shortcode so users can manage what they saved.
Common problems and fixes
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
- Why it happens
- The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
- How to fix it
- Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
- Why it happens
- The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
- How to fix it
- Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
- Why it happens
- Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
- How to fix it
- Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
- Why it happens
- The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
- How to fix it
- Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.
