About WooCommerce Product Configurator – Iconic 1.3.6
WooCommerce Product Configurator is a plugin from Iconic for products that shoppers put together themselves: a bag in different colours and straps, a bike with chosen parts, a watch with a different face and band. Instead of a dropdown and a single photo, the product image is assembled from layers that change as the shopper picks options.
It builds on WooCommerce's own variable products. You set up attributes and variations as usual, then give each option an image layer, so the preview shows the combination chosen. Prices, stock and orders keep running through WooCommerce's normal variation system rather than a separate one.
The file on record dates from August 2019. Test it with your current WooCommerce and theme on a staging site before using it live. Plan on preparing the layer images yourself, as transparent PNGs cut to the same size.
Requirements
- WooCommerce
- Variable products with attributes
Key features
- Live image preview
- The product image updates as the shopper picks options, so they see the combination before they buy.
- Layered images
- Each option has its own transparent image layer, and the layers stack to build the finished product picture.
- Built on variable products
- Uses WooCommerce attributes and variations, so prices and stock levels stay in the system you already use.
- Several attributes at once
- Layers from different attributes combine, so a choice of colour and a choice of strap show together.
- Standard cart and checkout
- The chosen combination goes to the cart as an ordinary WooCommerce variation, with no separate checkout.
Is it right for you?
A good fit for
- Shops selling customisable products such as bikes, bags, watches or furniture
- Stores with a manageable number of parts, where preparing a layer image per option is realistic
- Merchants who want shoppers to see the finished product, not just choose from a dropdown
Look elsewhere if
- Products where customers add their own text or artwork, which needs a product designer rather than an option picker
- Catalogues with so many options that preparing every layer image isn't practical
- Stores that don't run on WooCommerce
How to install WooCommerce Product Configurator – Iconic 1.3.6
- 1
Download the file
Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.
- 2
Upload it to WordPress
In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.
- 3
Install and activate
Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.
Notes for this product
- Prepare your layer images before you start: one transparent PNG for each option, all exported at the same canvas size so the layers line up.
Setup: using WooCommerce Product Configurator – Iconic 1.3.6
- Create a variable product. In WooCommerce, add a variable product with the attributes shoppers will choose between, and create the variations.
- Prepare the layer images. Export one transparent PNG per option from your design tool, all at the same dimensions.
- Assign a layer to each option. In the product editor, open the configurator settings and attach an image layer to each attribute option.
- Test every combination. Open the product page and pick each option in turn, checking that layers line up and the right image shows.
- Check phones and the cart. View the product on a phone and add a configured product to the cart to confirm the right variation, price and stock are used.
Common problems and fixes
Layers look misaligned or stretched
- Why it happens
- The layer images have different dimensions, so they don't sit on top of each other correctly.
- How to fix it
- Re-export every layer at the same canvas size, keeping the part of the product in its final position within the image.
The preview image doesn't update when options change
- Why it happens
- Your theme or a gallery plugin is replacing the product image area, or a caching or optimisation plugin is interfering with the scripts.
- How to fix it
- Test with a default theme such as Storefront, turn off other product gallery plugins, and clear all caches.
A chosen combination can't be added to the cart
- Why it happens
- The matching variation is missing a price or stock, or the attribute isn't marked as used for variations.
- How to fix it
- Open the product's variations, confirm each has a price and stock status, and check that the attribute has Used for variations ticked.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
- Why it happens
- The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
- How to fix it
- Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
- Why it happens
- The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
- How to fix it
- Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
- Why it happens
- Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
- How to fix it
- Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
- Why it happens
- The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
- How to fix it
- Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work with simple products?
No. It builds on WooCommerce variable products, so each choice maps to an attribute and a variation.
Can customers upload their own artwork or text?
No. It lets shoppers choose between options you have prepared, not add their own content. A product designer plugin is the tool for that.
What kind of images do I need?
Transparent PNG layers, one per option, all the same size, so that they can be stacked on top of each other.
Will it work with my current WooCommerce version?
The file dates from 2019, so test it on a staging copy of your store first, including the product page, cart and checkout.
Will the layered images slow my product page?
Each layer is an extra image, so compress them and keep dimensions sensible. Products with many layers load more slowly than a single photo.
