About StudioPress News Pro Genesis WordPress Theme 3.3.0
News Pro is a news and magazine theme from StudioPress, built as a child theme for the Genesis Framework. In the store it is filed under blog and news-magazine themes. It is made for sites that publish many stories and want a home page divided into sections for featured and recent articles.
The important thing to know is that it's a child theme. It doesn't work on its own: the Genesis Framework has to be installed as the parent theme, and News Pro is activated on top of it. Genesis supplies the underlying code, security and search-friendly structure, and the child theme supplies the look.
Genesis child themes usually build their home pages from widget areas, so you set up the layout in Appearance, Widgets rather than with a page builder. The version on file dates from November 2017, so test it with your current WordPress and Genesis versions on a staging site first.
Requirements
- The Genesis Framework, installed as the parent theme
Key features
- News and magazine layout
- A layout for sites with many stories, with sections for featured and recent articles.
- Genesis Framework foundation
- Runs on Genesis, which provides the underlying code, security and structure.
- Widget-based home page
- Build and rearrange home page sections from widget areas in the dashboard.
- Responsive design
- Adapts to tablets and phones.
- Made by StudioPress
- Comes from the team behind Genesis, so it follows the framework's conventions.
Is it right for you?
A good fit for
- Local news sites and online magazines that publish regularly
- Sites already built on the Genesis Framework
- Publishers who prefer a stable framework and clean code
Look elsewhere if
- Sites that don't want to run the Genesis Framework as well
- Anyone who prefers building the home page with a drag-and-drop page builder
- Shops and portfolios, where a different theme fits better
How to install StudioPress News Pro Genesis WordPress Theme 3.3.0
- 1
Download the file
Open My Account β Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.
- 2
Find the installable theme zip
Theme packages often bundle the theme, a child theme, plugins and docs. The installable theme is the zip that has style.css at its top level.
- 3
Upload it to WordPress
Go to Appearance β Themes β Add New Theme β Upload Theme, choose the theme zip, then Install Now and Activate.
- 4
Install the recommended plugins
Most premium themes show a notice listing their required plugins. Install those before importing any demo content.
Notes for this product
- Install the Genesis Framework first, without activating it, then upload and activate News Pro. Without Genesis, WordPress will refuse the child theme.
Getting started: using StudioPress News Pro Genesis WordPress Theme 3.3.0
- Install the Genesis Framework. Upload the Genesis parent theme under Appearance, Themes, but don't activate it.
- Install and activate News Pro. Upload the child theme zip and activate it, which also activates Genesis behind it.
- Build the home page from widgets. Go to Appearance, Widgets and add content to the home page widget areas to build each section.
- Set colours and layout options. Use the Customiser and Genesis settings to adjust colours, layouts and archive options.
- Create your menus. Build your navigation in Appearance, Menus and assign it to the theme's menu locations.
- Publish stories and test. Add posts with featured images and check how they appear in each section and on a phone.
Common problems and fixes
WordPress says the parent theme is missing when you install it
- Why it happens
- News Pro is a child theme and needs the Genesis Framework installed first.
- How to fix it
- Install the Genesis Framework as a theme, without activating it, then install News Pro again.
The home page looks empty after activating
- Why it happens
- Home page sections come from widget areas, and they're empty until you add widgets.
- How to fix it
- Go to Appearance, Widgets and add featured post widgets to each home page area.
βThe package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.β
- Why it happens
- The full download package was uploaded instead of the theme zip inside it.
- How to fix it
- Unzip the package and upload the zip that contains style.css at its top level.
βThe link you followed has expired.β when uploading
- Why it happens
- The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
- How to fix it
- Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/themes with your host's file manager or SFTP.
Demo import stops part-way or times out
- Why it happens
- The server hits its execution-time or memory limit during the import.
- How to fix it
- Raise max_execution_time and memory_limit with your host, then re-run the importer; importing content, widgets and settings separately also helps.
Pages look broken right after activating
- Why it happens
- The theme's required plugins (page builder, theme core plugin) aren't installed yet.
- How to fix it
- Install and activate everything in the theme's required-plugins notice, then reload.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need the Genesis Framework?
Yes. News Pro is a child theme, and Genesis has to be installed as the parent theme.
Is the Genesis Framework included?
Install it separately. A child theme zip doesn't replace the parent, so check that Genesis is available before you begin.
How do I set up the home page?
By adding content to its widget areas in Appearance, Widgets, not through a page builder.
Will it work with the current WordPress?
The file dates from November 2017, so test it with your current WordPress and Genesis versions on a staging copy first.
