About StudioPress Magazine Pro Genesis WordPress Theme 3.7.0

Magazine Pro is a magazine-style theme from StudioPress, built as a child theme for the Genesis Framework. It gives a news site or an editorial blog a layout in the style of a print magazine: a busy home page with featured stories and several sections, and clean article pages.

The important thing to know is that it's a child theme. It doesn't work on its own: the Genesis Framework has to be installed on your site as the parent theme, and Magazine Pro is activated on top of it. Genesis provides the engine, with its security, SEO and code foundations, and the child theme provides the look.

Genesis child themes build their home pages from widget areas, which gives you control over each section but means you set the layout up in Appearance, Widgets rather than with a page builder. The version on file is from November 2017, so test it with your current WordPress and Genesis versions before launch.

Requirements

  • The Genesis Framework, installed as the parent theme

Key features

Magazine-style layout
A home page arranged like a magazine, with featured and secondary stories in sections.
Widget-based home page
Build and rearrange home page sections from widget areas in the dashboard.
Genesis Framework foundation
Runs on Genesis, which provides the underlying code, security and search-friendly structure.
Responsive design
Adapts to tablets and phones.
Customiser options
Use WordPress's Customiser for colours and layout settings, where the theme provides them.

Is it right for you?

A good fit for

  • News sites and online magazines that publish many stories
  • Bloggers who want an editorial, multi-section home page
  • Sites already built on the Genesis Framework

Look elsewhere if

  • Sites that don't want to run the Genesis Framework as well
  • Anyone who prefers building the home page with a drag-and-drop page builder
  • Shops, portfolios or small business sites, where a different theme fits better

How to install StudioPress Magazine Pro Genesis WordPress Theme 3.7.0

  1. 1

    Download the file

Open My Account β†’ Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.

  2. 2

    Find the installable theme zip

Theme packages often bundle the theme, a child theme, plugins and docs. The installable theme is the zip that has style.css at its top level.

  3. 3

    Upload it to WordPress

Go to Appearance β†’ Themes β†’ Add New Theme β†’ Upload Theme, choose the theme zip, then Install Now and Activate.

  4. 4

    Install the recommended plugins

Most premium themes show a notice listing their required plugins. Install those before importing any demo content.

Notes for this product

  • Install the Genesis Framework first, without activating it. Then upload and activate Magazine Pro. If Genesis isn't installed, WordPress will refuse the child theme.

Getting started: using StudioPress Magazine Pro Genesis WordPress Theme 3.7.0

  1. Install the Genesis Framework. Upload the Genesis parent theme under Appearance, Themes, but don't activate it.
  2. Install and activate Magazine Pro. Upload the Magazine Pro zip and activate it, which also activates Genesis behind it.
  3. Build the home page from widgets. Go to Appearance, Widgets and add content to the home page widget areas to build each section.
  4. Set colours and layout options. Open the Customiser and Genesis settings to adjust colours, layouts and archive options.
  5. Create your menus. Build your navigation in Appearance, Menus and assign it to the theme's menu locations.
  6. Publish stories and test. Add posts with featured images, then check how they appear in each section and on a phone.

Common problems and fixes

WordPress says the parent theme is missing when you install it
Why it happens
Magazine Pro is a child theme and needs the Genesis Framework installed first.
How to fix it
Install the Genesis Framework as a theme, without activating it, then install Magazine Pro again.
The home page looks empty after activating
Why it happens
Home page sections are built from widget areas, and they are empty until you add widgets.
How to fix it
Go to Appearance, Widgets and add content such as featured post widgets to each home page area.
β€œThe package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.”
Why it happens
The full download package was uploaded instead of the theme zip inside it.
How to fix it
Unzip the package and upload the zip that contains style.css at its top level.
β€œThe link you followed has expired.” when uploading
Why it happens
The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
How to fix it
Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/themes with your host's file manager or SFTP.
Demo import stops part-way or times out
Why it happens
The server hits its execution-time or memory limit during the import.
How to fix it
Raise max_execution_time and memory_limit with your host, then re-run the importer; importing content, widgets and settings separately also helps.
Pages look broken right after activating
Why it happens
The theme's required plugins (page builder, theme core plugin) aren't installed yet.
How to fix it
Install and activate everything in the theme's required-plugins notice, then reload.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Genesis Framework?

Yes. Magazine Pro is a child theme, and Genesis has to be installed as the parent theme.

Is the Genesis Framework included?

Install it separately. The child theme zip doesn't replace the parent, so check that Genesis is available before you begin.

How do I set up the home page?

By adding content to its widget areas in Appearance, Widgets, rather than through a page builder.

Will it work with the current WordPress?

The file dates from November 2017, so test it with your current WordPress and Genesis versions on a staging copy first.
