About Really Simple SSL Pro 5.3.0
Really Simple SSL is a WordPress plugin that detects your SSL certificate, redirects visitors to HTTPS and fixes insecure content, such as images or scripts still loaded over HTTP. The Pro version adds further options on top. The file on record is version 5.3.0 and the listing gives a 2022 release date.
It does not create an SSL certificate. You still need one installed on your server, usually through your host. The old description on the listing quotes a different version number, so trust the version shown on the plugin itself after install. As with any plugin that changes redirects, test it on a staging site first.
Requirements
- An SSL certificate installed on your hosting account
Key features
- SSL detection
- Checks whether your site has a working certificate before switching to HTTPS.
- HTTPS redirect
- Sends visitors from HTTP addresses to the secure version of your pages.
- Mixed-content fixes
- Corrects resources that are still loaded over HTTP and trigger browser warnings.
- Pro options
- The Pro version adds settings beyond the free plugin; the listing doesn't list them.
Is it right for you?
A good fit for
- Site owners moving an existing WordPress site to HTTPS
- Sites with a padlock warning caused by mixed content
Look elsewhere if
- Sites with no SSL certificate on the server; the plugin can't supply one
How to install Really Simple SSL Pro 5.3.0
- 1
Download the file
Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.
- 2
Upload it to WordPress
In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.
- 3
Install and activate
Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.
Notes for this product
- The Pro plugin is designed to work with the free Really Simple SSL plugin. Check the plugin's own screens after activation to see whether the free plugin is also required.
Setup: using Really Simple SSL Pro 5.3.0
- Confirm your certificate works. Open your site with https:// in the address bar and check there is no browser warning.
- Back up your site. Take a full backup before changing redirects and URLs.
- Activate and follow the prompts. Let the plugin run its checks and enable SSL when it reports a valid certificate.
- Check the padlock on key pages. Visit the home page, a post and checkout pages, and look for remaining mixed-content warnings.
Common problems and fixes
The browser reports too many redirects after enabling SSL
- Why it happens
- A redirect loop, often because the server, a CDN or another plugin also forces HTTPS.
- How to fix it
- Turn off the duplicate redirect in the other layer, clear caches and check the site URL settings.
The padlock still shows a warning on some pages
- Why it happens
- Some content is hard-coded with http:// links that the plugin can't rewrite.
- How to fix it
- Find the insecure link in your browser's developer tools and update it in the content or theme.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
- Why it happens
- The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
- How to fix it
- Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
- Why it happens
- The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
- How to fix it
- Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
- Why it happens
- Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
- How to fix it
- Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
- Why it happens
- The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
- How to fix it
- Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.
Frequently asked questions
Does this plugin provide an SSL certificate?
No. It switches your site to HTTPS once a certificate is installed. Most hosts offer certificates in their control panel.
Will it fix mixed-content warnings?
It is designed to fix most of them automatically. Links hard-coded in content or theme files may still need editing.
Why does the version differ from the old description?
The old text quotes an older number. The file on record is 5.3.0.
