About Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) Pro 6.2.4
Advanced Custom Fields Pro, usually shortened to ACF Pro, lets you add your own fields to WordPress edit screens. Instead of cramming everything into the main editor, you define fields such as text, images, dates or links, and attach them to posts, pages, custom post types or other screens. It is a developer and site-builder tool.
Adding fields is only half the job. The values are saved with the content, and your theme or page builder then has to display them, either with ACF's template functions or through a builder that can read custom fields. If you only want to type extra text on a page, a plain editor block is simpler.
The product name says 5.9.1, but the version on file is 6.2.4, and the file on record dates from October 2022. Test it with your current WordPress and PHP versions on a staging site before using it on a live site.
Requirements
- WordPress
Key features
- Custom fields on edit screens
- Build field groups and attach them to posts, pages, custom post types and other content.
- Many field types
- Choose from text, images, dates, links and other inputs to give editors a form that fits the content.
- Location rules
- Control which screens show a field group, for example only one page template or post type.
- Output in your templates
- Read saved values in theme files with ACF functions, or use a page builder that can pull custom fields.
- Pro-level field options
- The Pro plugin adds extra field types, such as repeating rows and flexible layouts, that the free ACF plugin leaves out.
Is it right for you?
A good fit for
- Developers building custom post types with structured content like staff, events or products
- Agencies who want clients to edit content through a clean form rather than a page builder
- Sites that need repeatable sections, such as feature lists or team members, managed from the editor
Look elsewhere if
- Sites that only need a few extra paragraphs, where the normal editor is enough
- Anyone who doesn't edit theme files or use a builder that reads custom fields, since saved values must be displayed somewhere
How to install Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) Pro 6.2.4
- 1
Download the file
Open My Account → Downloads and download the product. If the archive contains several zips (documentation, child theme, licensing files), you need the one named after the product.
- 2
Upload it to WordPress
In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.
- 3
Install and activate
Click Install Now, then Activate. If an older or free copy is already installed, WordPress offers to replace it with the uploaded version.
Setup: using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) Pro 6.2.4
- Activate the plugin. Activate ACF Pro and look for the new Custom Fields menu in the WordPress admin.
- Create a field group. Add a new field group, then add the fields you need and give each a clear name.
- Set the location rule. Choose where the group appears, such as a post type or page template, and publish it.
- Fill in a test entry. Open a post or page that matches the rule and enter values in the new fields.
- Show the values on the front end. Output the fields in your theme template with ACF's functions, or connect them in a builder that supports custom fields.
Common problems and fixes
The field group doesn't show on the edit screen
- Why it happens
- The location rule doesn't match the post type, template or user role you are editing.
- How to fix it
- Open the field group, check the location rules, and make sure the group is published.
Fields are saved but nothing appears on the page
- Why it happens
- ACF stores values but doesn't print them; the template has to ask for them.
- How to fix it
- Add the output code to the theme template, or map the fields in your page builder, using the exact field name.
“The link you followed has expired.” when uploading
- Why it happens
- The zip is larger than your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
- How to fix it
- Raise the upload limit in your hosting control panel, or unzip the file and upload the folder to wp-content/plugins with your host's file manager or SFTP.
“The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
- Why it happens
- The uploaded zip is a bundle (or a theme), not the plugin itself.
- How to fix it
- Unzip the download once and upload the inner zip named after the plugin.
“Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
- Why it happens
- Usually a PHP version older than the plugin needs, or a second copy of the same plugin (for example the free version) still active.
- How to fix it
- Check your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info, deactivate any other copy of the plugin, and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG to see the exact error.
Licence or “updates unavailable” notices
- Why it happens
- The developer's licence key isn't included. Features that call the developer's servers (template libraries, cloud APIs, automatic updates) need it.
- How to fix it
- Everything that runs locally works without it. For a newer file, use Request an update from your account.
Frequently asked questions
Which version is this?
The product name says 5.9.1, but the version on file is 6.2.4, dated October 2022. Check the plugin header after upload to confirm.
Does ACF Pro display fields for me?
Not by default. It stores the values, and your theme, a shortcode or a compatible page builder has to show them.
Do I need to know how to code?
Creating field groups needs no code. Showing the values in a custom theme usually needs a little PHP, unless your builder can read custom fields.
Will it work with the current WordPress?
The file on record is from 2022, so test it on a staging copy with your current WordPress and PHP before going live.
